Bills trade WR Sammy Watkins to Rams, CB Ronald Darby to Eagles

The Buffalo Bills announced two trades on Friday afternoon, with receiver Sammy Watkins headed to the L.A. Rams and fellow wideout Jordan Matthews inbound from the Philadelphia Eagles. "We were not out there shopping Jordan Matthews".

Before we get into Darby and what he brings to the Eagles, let's talk about what the Eagles are losing in Matthews.

A three-year standout at Florida State, Darby was the ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2012. His production on the ball, he doesn't have a high interception number but is PBU (pass break ups) number is incredibly high. He's one of just seven players in National Football League history to put up those numbers in his first three National Football League seasons.

Matthews was entering the final-year of his contract and had been the subject of multiple trade rumors, though social media reaction was more shock than awe among fans. "It never came down to this guy's asking for too much money and we're not willing to do this so we better ship him out now".

But let's not bury the lead when it comes to Pederson's team.

The Bills' decision to trade their top receiver and top cornerback for future draft picks signals that first-year general manager Brandon Beane and coach Sean McDermott view the Bills as a long-term rebuilding project. The VP added that he would not have done the deal if the player they were getting back had only one year left on his contract. And he didn't rule out a possible reunion with Matthews, however unrealistic that might be.

Watkins and Matthews will both become unrestricted free agents in March. He has pulled in at least 67 catches in each season he has been with the Eagles, and has missed only two games in three seasons. After the additions of Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith, and with Mack Hollins and Marcus Johnson also having strong training camps, the Eagles could afford to part with somebody.

But Matthews' departure will still leave a void. J-Matt was the best teammate and friend you could ask for.

Cornerback was clearly the team's greatest need, and there was a clamoring to do something. "This isn't one where you're celebrating and doing a dance because you're giving up a good player and a good pick". Brooks looks like he has recovered from his quad injury, but the team still seemed to be lacking that reliable player at the position. But it hurts when people you care about leave. Matthews is a talented young player with loads of potential.
