Cate Blanchett To Play Lucille Ball In Sorkin Scripted 'Lucy & Desi'

In 2003, CBS aired a television movie simply titled Lucy, which starred Rachel York as Lucille Ball, but the film was criticized for a number of historical inaccuracies.

The film was picked up by Amazon Studios, E! Oscar victor Cate Blanchett has been attached to play the beloved, Emmy-winning comedian in the authorized telling of the sitcom stars' romantic and business partnerships.

The Oscar victor signed on to play the "I Love Lucy" actress in a film penned by screenwriter Aaron Sorkin in September, 2015, and now, nearly two years on, the project is finally beginning to take shape.

There have been previous attempts to bring this Hollywood love story to the screen, including 1991's Lucy & Desi: Before the Laughter, with Francis Fisher and Maurice Bernard in the title roles.

Blanchett, who recently made her Broadway debut in THE PRESENT, will soon return to the London stage in the role of Margo Channing in Ivo van Hove's ALL ABOUT EVE. What's more, the movie will center on Ball's life and her marriage to Arnaz. As their production company grew, their relationship became more and more strained until finally, in 1960, Ball filed for divorce a day after Arnaz's 43rd birthday.

According to the publication, Lucille and ex-husband Desi Arnaz's children, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr., are producing the biopic.

The West Wing writer Aaron Sorkin is set to write the film and we can hear the fait ring of Oscar nominations in our ears.

No other casting details have been announced at this point, though Javier Bardem is reportedly being considered to play Arnaz.
