Video from an Everyday Convenience Store shows Mr. McCarthy driving his auto into the store parking lot shortly before Officer Michael was killed, the sergeant wrote.

Michael, 37, had been on the force less than a year, Missouri Highway Patrol Sgt. Bill Lowe said.

Police also said McCarthy is armed and risky.

Before the shooting, surveillance from a convenience store showed the driver of a Dodge Nitro, later identified by a witness as McCarthy, pull into the parking lot and enter the store, the probable cause statement said.

Mr Michael was a lifelong resident of Clinton.

A manhunt is underway after a rookie police officer was shot and killed at a traffic stop in Clinton, Missouri, police said.

Michael was shot during a traffic stop in Clinton. The officer was able to return fire, but police aren't sure if the suspect was struck. The suspect then fled the scene and his whereabouts is unknown.

Lowe says it's not clear if the suspect was shot.

During the traffic stop, police said the suspect pulled out a gun and opened fire.

The auto was discovered around 6:30 a.m., but a search of the nearby area and a subsequent search of the suspect's home didn't turn up any leads.

The Clinton Police Department has no body camera policy, but police were working Monday morning to determine if there was dashcam video from Michael's auto or surveillance video from nearby businesses, Lowe said.

Clinton is located about 75 miles southeast of Kansas City.

No further details have been released.
