Terror probe after blade incident at Eiffel Tower

The man, who is aged around 19 and has a history of psychological problems, forced his way past security guards and then shouted, "Allahu Akbar" ("God is Great"), a legal source told AFP.

The incident at the world-famous tourist site was initially treated as a criminal matter, but was later designated a counter-terrorism case because of the suspect's statements to police and his apparent radicalization, the source said.

The occurrence at the Eiffel tower occurred at 23:30 pm (21:30 GMT) on Saturday night.

The man was quickly subdued by soldiers and taken into custody, while police cleared out visitors in order to conduct a search of the entire area.

An anonymous French security source told the agency that the assailant claimed he was encouraged to try and attack a soldier by an Isis member he had recently been in contact with.

Israel says guard at Amman embassy shot after being attacked
Following the attack, the Israeli deputy ambassador remained in Cairo; 85 staff members and their families returned to Israel. Israel installed metal detectors at entrances to the site after an attack nearby on July 14 that killed two of its policemen.

The suspect was born in Mauritania in 1998, but has French citizenship, the official said.

The intruder was wearing a Paris Saint-Germain soccer shirt.

City authorities plan to replace the makeshift barriers now surrounding the Eiffel Tower with bulletproof glass walls on two sides, and metal fences on the other two. At the time of the incident the tower was lit up with the colours of the team to welcome the club's new world-record signing, Brazilian star Neymar.

France has been in an official state of emergency since November 2015 when 130 people were left dead in coordinated attacks in the capital, including an assault on a rock concert in the Bataclan theatre.
