Tensions have soared since Friday.

One Palestinian was seriously injured after being hit by a rubber bullet, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent.

The Wakf ordered Muslims not to comply with the new measures, warning yet again that the al-Aksa Mosque is endangered.

After the prayers, the Palestinians staged a protest against the enhanced security measures, chanting they were ready "to sacrifice ourselves for Al-Aqsa (mosque) with our soul and our blood", as Israeli border guards looked on.

The rioting was sparked by new security measures introduced over the weekend by the Israelis after police were attacked at the site, known to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary and to Jews as the Temple Mount.

Leaders of the Muslim religious trust that runs the site urged worshippers not to pass through the metal detectors, describing them as a violation of a delicate status quo with Israel and held a prayer service next to the devices.

Safadi said that Jordan, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah the custodian of the holy Islamic and Christian sites in Jerusalem, will work with partners and friends to restore calm and resolve the crisis. It is Islam's third-holiest site after Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia.

During that incident, two Israeli security officers were killed in an alleged attack by three Palestinians who were killed by Israeli police following the violence.

The Waqf, Jordan's Islamic authority that manages religious affairs at the site, was outraged over the metal detectors, according to AP. Hopefully, the Temple Mount metal detectors will do the same. He said that security measures of this kind are commonplace in the world.

But this week, the Waqf was boycotting the Temple Mount over Israel's decision to reinstall metal detectors at its entrances.

Meanwhile, Israel's security forces are on high alert following a call by Palestinian Authority (PA) head Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah party on Wednesday for a "day of rage" in Jerusalem and in Judea and Samaria to protest Israel's presence on the Temple Mount. Two Israeli policemen were gunned down by Arab gunmen with Israeli citizenship. Jordan's stance is that anything installed at the site must be approved by the Waqf, or Muslim administration, and can not change the status quo, said the official.
