Two tourists stabbed to death in Egypt knife attack

Egypt's Interior Ministry says six tourists of various nationalities were wounded when a knifeman attacked them in the Red Sea resort of Hurghada.

The ministry said the tourists were rushed to a local hospital.

The ministry said the assailant was arrested immediately after the stabbings. The news agency AP confirmed the victims' nationality.

The dead were first identified as Ukrainian, but Major General Mohamed El-Hamzawi, Red Sea region's security manager, later said they were German.

However, the 29-year-old showed her pedigree to hold and win the next two games, bringing the set back on serve. And Kerber's prospects appeared bleak when a wild backhand gave her opponent a deserved early lead in set two.

He stabbed the tourists in the face, neck and feet.

The Zahabia and El Palacio hotels in Hurghada, one of Egypt's most popular holiday resorts, around 400 kilometres south of the capital Cairo, both have their own private beach. "We don't know his motives yet, he could be insane or perturbed - it's too early to tell", a senior interior ministry official told the French news agency AFP.

Security has been boosted in tourist resorts around the country, as the industry provides Egypt with much needed revenues. In January 2016, two men injured at least three European tourists in a stabbing at a hotel, authorities said then.

Earlier on Friday, five security personnel were killed when militants opened fire randomly on a checkpoint in Egyptian province of Giza.
