DPP urges China to free Liu Xiaobo

The Chinese hospital that is treating imprisoned Nobel Peace laureate Liu Xiaobo for advanced liver cancer says his condition has worsened as abdominal fluid accumulates.

Hu Jia, another well-known dissident, welcomed the doctors' statement as very positive, saying it essentially refuted suggestions Mr Liu was too sick to be moved and it paved the way for him to be treated overseas.

In their statement, the German and American medical specialists who spoke with Lui on Saturday said "the University of Heidelberg and MD Anderson have each agreed to accept Mr. Liu for treatment".

Mr Liu is being treated in a Shenyang hospital for late stage liver cancer.

"The U.S. and Germany experts fully approved of the treatment by the national experts group and what they had done", the hospital said in a statement.

"While a degree of risk always exists in the movement of any patient, both physicians believe Mr. Liu can be safely transported with appropriate medical evacuation care and support", oncologist Joseph Herman, of the MD Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas, and Markus Buchler, a doctor at Germany's Heidelberg University, said in a joint statement.

Meanwhile, the Chinese government has maintained that Liu is receiving the best treatment possible at the First Hospital of China Medical University in the northern city of Shenyang.

The experts' visit comes as Liu's illness has taken a turn for the worse. Chinese doctors said on Friday that they have stopped using cancer-fighting drugs so as not to overwhelm his severely weakened liver.

If his liver function improves, they could consider immunotherapy, but for now Liu will continue supportive therapy to alleviate the pain and "elevate his quality of life", the hospital said. At times, Liu was lucid enough to communicate in English, Shang said.

The driver in that clipped vehicle told ABC7 that the plane hit the rear end of his truck, which then went out of control. IRVINE (CBS) - CBS in Los Angeles is reporting that a plane has crash landed on the Interstate 405 freeway in Irvine.

In a sign of the seriousness of Liu's decline, his younger and older brothers and their wives were being allowed to see him, Shang said.

Friends and fellow activists have intensified their campaign to pressure authorities to release Mr Liu in recent days. Authorities have also kept Liu's wife, Xia, under house arrest.

He was awarded the Nobel peace prize in 2010 for his "long and non-violent struggle".

China's foreign ministry had no immediate response to a request for comment Saturday.

"In this case, Xi Jinping should exercise that power so that Liu Xiaobo can go overseas for treatment".

"It has been explained to me, to put things more bluntly, that the additional recommended treatments overseas could both extend Liu's life by several weeks and also reduce the pain that he feels during his remaining days", says Jared Genser, Liu's Washington D.C. -based lawyer.

Taiwan's government has expressed its willingness to "provide possible assistance" to Liu and his family after a DPP lawmaker and others urged China to allow Liu to come to Taiwan to receive medical treatment, saying the island is ready to welcome the ailing human rights activist.

The United Nations human rights office demanded last Friday (July 7) that the UN be given access to Mr Liu, but as world leaders met with their Chinese counterpart in Germany, they remained largely silent on laureate's fate.
