Democrats stall Senate work to protest healthcare secrecy

Senate Democrats say they're hatching a strategy to put more focus on Republican health-care legislation that polls have shown is unpopular with the public.

They will begin to object to all "unanimous consent" requests in the Senate that speed along debate - except for honorary resolutions, such as one honoring the victims of last week's shooting at a congressional Republican baseball practice.

Democratic senators are planning to hold the Senate floor until at least midnight on Monday to thrash Senate Republicans for refusing to hold committee hearings on their healthcare overhaul, according to several people familiar with the plan.

Portman's coffee meetings are usually quiet, uncontroversial affairs attended by business groups or curious tourists, but Neiman sees it as a rare opportunity for activists to tell the Senator not to vote for Republicans' health care bill.

The senators targeted in the ads have expressed some reservations about the emerging Senate legislation or the process and timeline with which GOP leaders are crafting it. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and a small clutch of aides are writing the bill behind closed doors as McConnell consults GOP senators. Not a single Senate Republican on the 13-person working committee drafting the bill has held a town hall since the House passed its bill in May.

Popular vote loser Donald Trump has promised that the Senate Trumpcare bill will be "generous, kind, with heart". Voters are increasingly less likely to trust Republicans on health care, and independent voters have been embracing Obamacare.

Prior to becoming the president, Trump handled businesses that own hotels in New York City, Las Vegas, Chicago and Miami.

Senate Republicans are weighing a slower phase-out of Obamacare's Medicaid expansion, better protection for people with pre-existing conditions, and tax credits based on income as well as age. It defies everything that various GOP senators said last month.

Democrats are weighing a strategy to get more public attention on the debate in the next two weeks, said Matt House, spokesman for Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY, but he declined to discuss details.

The concern from the Left is that the new bill won't be close enough to Obamacare's original (failing) structure for comfort, while concerns from conservatives have been that it will do even less to get rid of that structure than the House version. They then listed all of the rooms available in Senate Office buildings for them to schedule a health care hearing. The Senate majority leader and other members of the Republican leadership will be occupied this week attending multiple high-dollar fundraising events. Or it could be forced to cancel its monthlong August recess as intra-party divisions over the American Health Care Act (not to mention the big items standing behind it in the queue) drag on.

"I think it's being written, uh, by someone somewhere but I'm not aware of who or where", Sen. The bill has not been made public, and Senate Republicans have no plans to release the bill before it goes to a vote.
