Milwaukee Sheriff David Clarke reportedly cancels bid for White

Clarke is notorious in Milwaukee for the disproportionate size of his media presence as compared to the actual size of his role in the city's sheriff's department.

Clarke announced on May 17th that he would resign in June so he could accept a position in President Donald Trump's administration. According to the Post, Clarke's appointment was subject to delays, which contributed to him backing out of the position.

Sheriff David Clarke announced in May that he would be joining the Department of Homeland Security, but he has changed his mind and rescinded his acceptance of that post, it was announced late Saturday.

Clarke adviser Craig Peterson said the sheriff believes he is of better use to President Trump "in a more aggressive role".

Clarke spoke in support of Trump at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland last July.

Clarke has also been criticized for his track record as Milwaukee County Sheriff. He added he is still reviewing his options, both inside and outside government.

Sheriff Clarke, who once claimed that the Islamic State and Black Lives Matter activists were forming an alliance to destroy America, notified John F. Kelly, the homeland security secretary, of his decision on Friday, according to an adviser.

He was hit by allegations last month that he plagiarized content in his master's thesis on homeland security, which he denied. Clarke isn't among the seven staffers — prosecutors said he wasn't directly involved in the events that led to the death of 38-year-old Terrill Thomas — but the death happened under Clarke's leadership, which his critics say is enough cause for his firing.
