Rallies against Islamic law draw counter-protests across US

Sirens blared and police vehicles pulled to the scene as counter-protesters linked arms, standing side by side on the street. Three people were arrested, according to a police press release.

Hundreds of counter-protesters marched through Seattle on Saturday to confront a few dozen people claiming Shariah is incompatible with Western freedoms.

Police kept the two contingents separated from each other during the sanctioned events but a large fight broke out afterward.

"This is a march against Sharia law and for human rights", ACT for America says on its website.

The protests happening in more than 20 major cities, including Chicago.

"Sharia law is what instigates them to kill", Robert Schmidt, 58, of Riverside said of radicalized Muslim terrorists. "I think the stand here is Sharia law is not compatible with the constitution and we believe in many places it's starting to creep in", anti-Sharia activist Donald James said.

Among the people gathered at the anti-Sharia protest were Trump supporters; self-identified "Oath Keepers", an anti-government group; and tidily dressed young men who identified themselves as members of the "alt-right", a white nationalist movement.

The rally was one of more than two dozen held across the US on Saturday to target the notion that extremist interpretations of Islamic law might somehow infect American democracy.

At least 20 people including a Republican candidate for Georgia governor gathered in an Atlanta park for a protest against Islamic law. "Don't bring Sharia law in here because it's created to take over the government".

The Threat of Sharia Law?

However, many marches were disrupted by counter-demonstrators, who accused participants of "Islamaphobia" and stoking hatred against Muslims.

Both sides carried signs, shouted at one another and occasionally tried to block the opposition's movement around the 8092 Plantation Drive entrance to the Islamic center.

"When somebody shows hate or bigotry our religion teaches us to repel it with something good", he said.

The "March Against Sharia" rally was one of several demonstrations held in more than 20 cities across the country, including New York, Chicago, Boston, Dallas and Atlanta.

Takim said Sharia offers guidelines or principles on how Muslims should live. "It is this we stand against, not peaceful Islam", the spokesperson said in the statement Saturday.

Next, he rounded on the far-left, saying "They're gonna blast a nonexistent rape culture, but they're not going to criticize Islam!... we will not yield to Islamic exceptionalism".

But it was noisy, with groups chanting, yelling and waving American flags and posters proclaiming various issues.
