The group selected for the monumental meeting between the U.S. president and the pontiff was diverse, including family members (First Lady Melania, daughter Ivanka, and son-in-law Jared) and staff (communications advisor Hope Hicks, former bodyguard Keith Schiller, State Department aide Brian Hook, and guardian of Trump's Twitter account Dan Scavino).

Trump and the pope met privately in a one-on-one conversation in a Vatican study on Wednesday.

The Holy See said in a statement that the meeting was "cordial". Trump was expected to be given a tour of the Vatican after he arrived and then meet with the pontiff in his library. But it seems the Pope's gift was laced with a touch of side-eye.

However, when it comes to meeting the Pope, visitors to the Vatican City are asked in advance to keep their shoulders covered, and their skirts below the knee.

"I think people are reading into it and misinterpreting it", presidential and first lady historian Jane Hampton Cook told the Washington Post.

The two men have had a rather rocky relationship.

Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner both got to meet the pope.

The two men had never met before this morning but they have significant history having clashed publicly over subjects ranging from migration to unbridled capitalism and climate change.

That Trump even had rosary beads was news - practicing Catholics often use the beads for prayers, moving fingers along each bead to keep track of how many times each is said, and repeated. "So I think that's going to be the core of his message to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation", he said.

However, the first lady's spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, today confirmed to CNN that Trump is indeed Catholic. The pope gave Trump a collection of books he wrote, as well as a medal crafted by an Italian artist featuring an olive branch symbolizing peace.

Pope Francis also gave Mr Trump a signed copy of his 2017 peace message whose title is Nonviolence - A Style of Politics for Peace, and a copy of his 2015 encyclical letter on the need to protect the environment from the effects of climate change. In Israel, Trump reaffirmed his commitment to strong ties with the longtime US ally and urged Israelis and the Palestinians to work harder toward peace.

Protests are also expected to continue in the week when Trump travels to Brussels for a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation meeting and Sicily for a G7 gathering.
