However, the longtime cable news king remained second in total viewership, with an average of 2.41 million viewers over the course of the week, compared with CNN's 1.65 million and MSNBC's leading 2.44 million. For the first time ever, MSNBC has won the week in both total viewers and the key news network demographic of adults 25-54 in primetime. For years, MSNBC was the perpetual third-place network after Fox News and CNN.

Fewer viewers are coming to Fox News in the 9 p.m. hour for "The Five", a loose conversation about the day's events with a happy hour atmosphere designed for the 5 p.m. "He helped start Fox News in 1996 and built it into a conservative news beacon and cable ratings powerhouse".

Ratings held up for the most part in the first few weeks after Fox replaced O'Reilly at 8 p.m.

Meanwhile, MSNBC's The Last Word With Lawrence O'Donnell has topped Hannity several times at 10 p.m. - both in the key demo and in overall ratings. If viewers wanted to hear more about what was happening in real time, they had to go elsewhere. MSNBC serves up anti-Trump commentary by the ton, while Fox has mainly stuck to the pro-Trump approach to story and guest selection.

Former Fox News host Bill O'Reilly said during an appearance on the "Glenn Beck Show" Friday that "Fox News has a problem", and doesn't appear to have a plan to deal with its current ratings crisis. Fox News came to prominence during the impeachment of President Bill Clinton and got a second-wind during the Obama administration, Tyndall said.

Nicole Kidman's young approach to acting career
She said: "My time is precious, I think once you reach a certain age the time becomes incredibly important - you're like [gasp]". Kidman wore an embellished green Dior dress to a photocall for the film, which co-stars Colin Farrell and Barry Keoghan .

"I do cable news in kind of a weird way".

Are we witnessing a sea change in cable news?

At 9 p.m., Fox News Channel's "The Five" was absolutely demolished by Cooper and MSNBC's "The Rachel Maddow Show", which won the key demographic by more than 200,000 viewers.

Even with the third-place finish last week, Fox News still ranks first among viewers and in the 25-to-54 age group in May. Among the 25-to-54-year-old audience that advertisers pay a premium for, Fox finished third to MSNBC and CNN for the first time in 17 years.

The bottom line may be that it's unrealistic to expect a conservative network to dominate cable in a (putatively) conservative single-party government, perhaps especially when the perception is that the network at times offers three different flavors of Trump apologetics night after night. Fox News viewers may still be expecting more substance in prime time.
