China welcomes U.S. ambassador pick

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Kim Reynolds was sworn in as Iowa's governor on Wednesday, becoming the state's first woman to hold the job after taking over for longtime Gov. Terry Branstad the same day he was sworn in as the US ambassador to China.

Branstad, 70, told lawmakers he intends to use his decades-long relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping to advance USA and worldwide interests.

Branstad will resign as governor Wednesday morning in his formal office at the Capitol.

"No one has been better prepared to become governor than Kim Reynolds", Branstad said. "These activities have directly impacted USA corn sales by helping us build trade relationships with our worldwide customers", said Hora, a Washington, Iowa, corn farmer. Iowa Soybean Association President Rolland Schnell says that will be helpful in enhancing trade opportunities for US soybean farmers.

The 70-year-old Branstad is in his sixth nonconsecutive term as Iowa's governor. He will then be sworn in as U.S. Ambassador to the People's Republic of China by Judge Steven Colloton of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit.

Kim Reynolds wants the history books to remember her as more than just Iowa's first woman governor.

Following the attack , Grande tweeted: "Broken. from the bottom of my heart, i am so so sorry. i don't have words". British Prime Minister Teresa May says authorities are treating the incident "as an appalling terrorist attack ".

Reynolds got her start in politics as treasurer for Clarke County, a largely rural county in southern Iowa with a population of less than 10,000.

Governor Branstad's chief of staff Michael Bousselot announced his resignation.

"Governor Reynolds' swearing-in today comes at a critical time for Iowa". "We have a lot of ideas, and we'd love to work with her on that". "We have no doubt she will be an extremely capable governor who will continue to care deeply about science, agriculture and biofuels, recognizing the benefits these key industries bring to our state", said Grant Kimberley, executive director of the Iowa Biodiesel Board. Her predecessor, Gov. Terry Branstad, was reserved a front row seat alongside Speaker of the House Linda Upmeyer, Senate Majority Leader Bill Dix and Reynolds' parents, Charles and Audrey Strawn.

I want to express my most honest congratulations to Governor Reynolds.

Following Branstad's swearing in ceremony, Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds will take the oath of office to become the first female governor in Iowa's history.

"For a long time, Mr Branstad has been playing a positive role in promoting bilateral exchanges and friendship", Hua said at a regular press briefing yesterday.
