Ryan Seacrest joins Kelly Ripa on 'Live'

Seacrest's move into the seat next to Ripa comes almost a year after Ripa's former co-host, Michael Strahan, left the Disney-distributed show for an anchor slot on ABC's "Good Morning America".

During today's show, Ripa started by thanking her fans as well as her many guest co-hosts for supporting her through the past year. The first episode of Live with Kelly and Ryan. As of today, the show will be known as "LIVE With Kelly & Ryan".

As the crowd roared, Ripa introduced Seacrest as the newest member of "Live!".

Other candidates for the job included Jerry O'Connell, Fred Savage, Anderson Cooper and John Leguizamo.

Ripa, 46, had teased the new host on Sunday, taking to Twitter with a video of her drinking coffee with a "Live with Kelly" mug, that also had a question mark on it.

She then increased the anticipation by going to commercial break before bringing Seacrest on stage.

Kelly's new NBC show will air at 9 a.m., creating competition for Ripa who hosts her show "Live" on ABC at the same time, noted Variety.

A succession of co-hosts, including Mr. Seacrest, joined Ms. Ripa in the year since Michael Strahan's departure. Philbin departed in 2011, and Strahan announced last spring that he was shifting to Good Morning America. There was some controversy, as Kelly Ripa was allegedly blindsided by his decision to move on.

"I couldn't be more excited to be here with you", he told her. She also has a fifth Emmy, and she actually shared it with Seacrest: in 2006 they both won Best Special Class Special as co-hosts of the "Walt Disney World Christmas Day Parade". Strahan had hosted alongside Ripa for four years.

Ryan, who has previously contributed to NBC's Today and the network's Olympics coverage, will move to NY to take up his new post. Seacrest will continue to work with E!, filling in as host for Red Carpet events. In recent years, he has handled ABC's "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve", where he covers the ball drop in Times Square.
