In Hooghly's Bhadreswar, three people died and thirty are lost

Hooghly: At least three people were killed and several others missing after a boat jetty sank in high tide in Hooghly district of West Bengal on Wednesday.

"Three people died by drowning after a temporary jetty at Telinipara Ghat in Hooghly district's Bhadreswar was wrecked by the high tide and collapsed into the river".

Superintendent of Police Sukesh Jain said, "We will investigate how the jetty collapsed, the exact condition of the jetty and whether there was lack of maintenance".

Following the mishap, locals and police from nearby Telenipara police outpost had started rescue efforts primarily and hours later, Kolkata Police's Disaster Management Group (DMG) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) joined the operation.

Eyewitness said that more than 60 to 70 people were standing on the bamboo jetty when it suddenly collapsed and they fell into the river.

Rescue workers recovered three bodies from the water on Wednesday and three more on Thursday while seven other were rescued alive and sent to a nearby hospital. "Rescue operations are underway as eight people are still missing", Jain told The Indian Express.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee, who was in Alipurduar in north Bengal, announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for families of the deceased and Rs 25,000 each for the injured.
