Chinese Gov't Approves Three Trademarks for First Daughter's Company — Ivanka's Business Booming

"Put the business on hold and stop trying to get trademarks while you're in government", Richard Painter, who served as chief White House ethics lawyer under George W. Bush, told AP.

The Trump campaign, the Trump transition team, and the Trump White House have all at various times insisted that Donald Trump and his family have given up so much in a selfless act of public service. With this latest news, a true separation seems less and less likely.

Yet Ivanka Trump, like her father, has refused to cut ties to her business while also assuming a large role in the Trump administration.

Perhaps if Ivanka Trump wasn't the new "modern first daughter", her business-separate from that of the Trump family empire and now in a gray area of White House ethics-would have continued to expand.

Despite boycotts and several stores limiting her merchandise, Ivanka's brand is flourishing, according to the AP.

Whether she does indeed avoid the appearance or substance of conflicts of interest remains to be seen. It was part of a widely publicized summit where trade cooperation between China and the USA was a main topic of discussion.

"I would never have allowed it. The federal ethics rules do not require you to recuse from any matter concerning a foreign country just because a business that you have an ownership interest in has a trademark application pending there". She would only technically need to step away from a meeting if the conversation turned to "duties on clothing imported from China", Ivanka's lawyer Jamie Gorelick told the Associated Press. The video of the performance was viewed over 2.2 million times on Chinese state media. Sales, by some measures, have reached record highs this year.

January 11, 2017: Ivanka Trump announces she will take a "formal leave of absence" from executive positions at the Trump Organization and her lifestyle brand.

Gorelick added that Ivanka would not participate in talks about tariffs on clothing imported from China, but could still be in on broad conversations about foreign policy.

Trump says that she has stepped back from any operational role within her company, so that she could focus on her position in the White House. Rather the government of China is awarding a trademark, something that many American companies find hard. She will also be able to sell her brand's jewelry, bags, and spa services. But the Trump family's situation is unprecedented due to their vast business holdings.

In a statement, Klem said the trademarks are business as usual, and in some regions to prevent "trademark infringement".

"Trademarking is a totally standard process, which companies have to do to protect themselves against predatory filers who want to infringe on the brand", the spokesperson said in an email. There is no indication the recent approvals were swift.

The latest worldwide trademarks are part of a bunch of global trademarks the family have invested in since taking office. Her company has provisionally won four new trademarks from China since the inauguration, and applied for at least nine new trademarks around the world since the election.

Ivanka Trump's brand is flourishing as the first daughter crafts a new career from her West Wing office.

Whatever the future plans, right now sales are growing - helped, some argue, by the glow of Ivanka Trump's political rise.
