Trump Advisers to Discuss Paris Agreement on Tuesday

Trump Advisers to Discuss Paris Agreement on Tuesday

"Senior officials will meet this week to discuss the options, with the goal of providing a recommendation to the President about the path forward", a senior White House official told CNN. Royal Dutch Shell Plc and BP Plc also have endorsed the pact.

Still miners said the Trump administration has brought them new hope.

As for India - which is on course to greatly increase its energy demand in coming years as electrification reaches more and more of the country's vast population - it, too, is moving to address climate change.

Companies from Starbucks and Pepsi to oil giant ExxonMobil and coal producer Cloud Peak Energy have lobbied the Trump administration to stay in the Paris agreement.

White House officials, led by the National Economic Council, have recently been asking publicly-traded energy companies for advice on whether to stay in the agreement. It remains to be seen whether Trump's daughter, Ivanka, will attend the meeting.

Environmental Protection Agency chief Scott Pruitt said Thursday during an appearance on Fox and Friendsthat the United States should exit the Paris climate agreement because the accord only serves the interests of Europe, China and India.

Trump is nearing a decision on whether he will fulfill repeated pledges to withdraw the US from the carbon-cutting pact he previously derided as "bad for USA business".

Tillerson's comments seemed to support the idea of staying in the Paris agreement, but McKenna said the USA would continue meeting and negotiating with other countries regardless, as part of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The meeting comes ahead of a summit of the Group of Seven wealthy nations in late May, which White House spokesman Sean Spicer said was the deadline for the decision.

Not every energy executive is on board.

In the energy sector, US carbon dioxide emissions have already declined by 14 per cent from 2005 to 2016, according to the US Energy Information Administration.

Supporters have argued that remaining in the pact would maintain goodwill with global trading partners, facilitating US energy exports, including expanded sales of liquefied natural gas overseas.

Pyle says plans to stay in Paris are based on a major misconception about the United Nations deal.

His budget director, Mick Mulvaney, described plans to cut government spending on climate change as stopping a "waste" of taxpayer money.

The Obama administration joined the accords previous year without Senate approval, committing the U.S.to cut greenhouse gas emissions 26 to 28 percent by 2025. It is not legally binding and there are no formal sanctions in place for failure to comply. ExxonMobil sent a letter to White House Adviser David Banks in March in favor of staying in the Paris deal. A key argument is that the US can stay in the agreement without satisfying its pledge or maintaining regulations created to help achieve the target, said one administration official. Although Trump could not instantly pull America out, he could initiate the process for the country's exit.

McKenna said a carbon tax seemed to be the only possible change to the U.S.'s commitments that would make them more ambitious and could also be construed as better for the economy.
