Seoul: North Korea fires ballistic missile off east coast

The KN-15 missile reportedly refers to what North Korea calls the solid-fuel "Pukguksong-2". The nation has fired a ballistic missile into the waters off its east coast.

Recent satellite imagery shows possible preparations for a test at North Korea's main nuclear test site, including the laying of communication cables used to initiate a test and collect data.

Council members said they "deplore" all North Korean ballistic missile activity, stressing it contributes to the country's development of nuclear weapons delivery systems and diverts resources from the needs of its people.

Citing top ranking U.S. military and intelligence officials, NBC reports that, ahead of the summit, the U.S. National Security Council presented President Trump with a proposal for the deployment of American nuclear weapons to South Korea. Washington, Seoul and others call the North's space program a cover for its long-range missile development program.

Despite high expectations an agreement could be struck on North Korea, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson laid out nothing special, saying both sides agreed that Pyongyang's nuclear programs had "reached a very serious stage" and reaffirmed their commitment to a denuclearized Korean peninsula. Many weapons experts say the North could have a functioning nuclear-tipped missile capable of reaching the continental USA within a few years. The North conducted two nuclear tests and 24 ballistic missile tests previous year, defying six Security Council sanctions resolutions banning any testing. It didn't pose a threat to North America, it said in a statement. "We need to balance the interest of each side".

The Health Department has directed all district and block level officers to prepare for exigencies in case of flood. Snow and rain over the past three days have forced the state government to close schools in the valley till Sunday.

Analysts say North Korea might also time nuclear and long-range rocket tests to the April 15 birthday of North Korea founder Kim Il Sung, the late grandfather of current leader Kim Jong Un.

North Korea often responds to the drills with its own military training and harsh rhetoric.

Tokyo will continue its prohibition of all trade between Japan and North Korea and ban on all North Korean ships from entering Japanese ports, Kyodo News reported earlier.

Two weeks ago, the South Korean and USA militaries said they had detected a failed North Korean ballistic missile launch.

North Korea conducted another ballistic missile test, shortly before the first meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump. The KN-15 missile tested in February flew about 500 kilometers (310 miles).
