Mets RHP Seth Lugo has torn elbow ligament, surgery possible

Lugo was projected to mount a legitimate charge toward a lower spot within the Mets rotation and started spring training well.

The ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) is the ligament that is commonly repaired in the always-dreaded Tommy John surgery.

Emmanuel Burriss, a seven-year major league veteran who spent last season with Philadelphia, was among eight players suspended under the sport's minor league drug program. He posted a 2-1 record and 4.20 ERA over 15 innings. Puerto Rico had enough confidence to give him the ball for the tournament's final against the United States, but he allowed four runs on five hits in an 8-0 loss.

Matz and Harvey dealt with significant injury problems last season, and Lugo's elbow is just another setback to the staff early this year. It's certainly possible he'll make it back to the Mets this season, but there's no timetable for his return. But in addition to Lugo, they've lost Matz with a strained flexor tendon.
