Ford recalls vehicles for possible engine fires, faulty door latches

Ford Motor Co., the second largest US automaker, on Wednesday announced two new recalls affecting 440,000 vehicles and expects to spend about $295 million to fix the issues. But 29 cases of fires have been reported.

The company is alerting 230,000 owners of four 2013 through 2015 models, including Fusion mid-size cars, Escape SUVs, Fiesta ST subcompacts and Transit Connect vans with 1.6-Liter turbocharged engines. If an engine overheats, it may crack a cylinder head, which can leak pressurized oil.

"Oil that comes into contact with a hot engine surface increases the risk of a fire in the engine compartment", the company said, adding that it knows of 29 "reports of fire associated with this issue" in the USA and Canada. If a vehicle has a coolant leak or overheats frequently, then customers should see their dealer right away.

Affected vehicles include 2014 Ford Fiestas, 2013 and 2014 Ford Fusions and 2013 and 2014 Lincoln MKZ vehicles.

In the affected vehicles, the pawl spring tab in the side door latch can break, causing the door not to close securely, and possibly open during driving. To fix the issue, dealers will install service kits which include a coolant level sensor with supporting hardware and software.

Certain 2017 F-450 and F-550 trucks need new driveshafts due to a "resonance frequency that may fracture transmission and/or driveline components".

Ford's final recall of the bunch affects just 111 examples of the 2017 Edge crossover.

Ford said it is not aware of any accidents or injuries associated with this issue in the vehicles included in this supplement to safety action 15S16. This increases the risk of a crash or injury.

There are approximately 548 vehicles located in North America, including 509 in the United States and 39 in Canada.

Dealers will replace the two-piece drive shaft with a three-piece version along with two center-bearing brackets.
