Priest arrested for schoolgirl's rape in Kerala

Kannur: A Malayalee priest, who is accused of raping a minor in Kannur, Kerala leading to her pregnancy, has been remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.

According to reports the 17-year-old gave birth to a baby at a private hospital last month.

A police team led by Peravoor circle inspector N Sunil Kumar nabbed Fr. Robin Vadakkumchery, a priest at Neendunokki St. Sebastians Church in Kottiyoor.

The girl is reported to have told the police that the priest had sexually abused her repeatedly in the Church. "He was trying to flee to Canada", the officer said, insisting more details could not be revealed as of now.

Police is now probing the role of the hospital where the girl delivered the baby if they followed all the necessary documentary procedures. The Childline authorities launched a search for the girl and they alerted the police after she was traced.

The crime came to light after the intervention by Childline volunteers who received an anonymous call.

In the initial stages, the victim had given a statement that her own father had committed the crime. The priest was said to be the manager of a school near Kottiyoor, Kannur where the girl was a student.

In a release issued in Kochi, Varghese Vallikkatt, Deputy Secretary General and official spokesperson of the council, said that the church had taken a serious note of the sexual assault case involving the priest. The newborn was shifted to a private orphanage in Vythiri in the nearby Wayanad district.
