The long list of 2017 James Beard Award restaurant and chef semifinalists is out, and some familiar Baltimore names made the cut in three categories.

Award semifinalists were selected from a list of more than 24,000 online entries, representing dining destinations in 10 different regions across the United States.

Selected from a list of over 24,000 online entries, the prestigious group of semifinalists in 21 categories represents a wide range of culinary talent, from exceptional chefs and dining destinations in ten different regions across the USA, to the nation's top wine and spirits professionals, best new restaurants, rising star chefs, pastry chefs, and bakers. No Hawaii chefs were named semifinalists in the regional Best Chef or Rising Star Chef of the Year categories this year.

Ilma Lopez of Piccolo in Portland is an Outstanding Pastry Chef semifinalist, and Alison Pray, one of the founders of Standard Baking Co., is up for Outstanding Baker.

Among the semi-finalists for the James Beard Assocation's Outstanding Restaurateurs award are Paul and Joe Bartolotta of The Bartolotta Restaurants.

Retail inflation at 3.17% in January
The food and beverages category registered an inflation rate of 1.3% in January, down from the 2% witnessed in December 2016. The prices of vegetables and pulses declined the most during the month of January from December.

Other Best Chef Midwest candidates from Wisconsin include Lisa Carlson of Chef Shack in Bay City; Dan Fox of Heritage Tavern in Madison, Jonny Hunter of Forequarter in Madison and Luke Zahm of Driftless Cafe in Viroqua.

Also earning recognition this year: Elizabeth Degener of Cape May's Enfin Farms, a semifinalist for outstanding baker. The James Beard Foundation Awards, known to industry folk as the culinary Oscars, is a little more baroque. The announcements are broadcast online via the Foundation's Facebook Live feed.

The Foundation will announce the final nominees for award categories March 15 during a press conference at a.o.c. restaurant in Los Angeles, California.
