But the battle for Al-Bab has proved the toughest in the campaign that claimed at least 67 Turkish troops' lives, according to tallies.

Turkey's units entered central al-Bab, the operation is being conducted in coordination with Russian Federation to prevent clashes with Syrian government forces. Our aim is to prevent the opening of corridors from territories controlled by terrorist organizations to Turkey.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported on Monday that 13 children had been among those killed in the Turkish shelling on the town, which lies 40 kilometers northeast of Aleppo.

Several armed clashes have taken place on Tuesday in Turkey's Nusaybin area, which borders the zone in northern Syria controlled by the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD).

Erdogan, speaking in Istanbul, said Al-Bab "is now besieged from all fronts".

Even in the Boston area, where the storm is starting later, snowfall is likely to come to an end before midnight tonight. Walsh said he feels the city is ready for the storm, but it's hard to fully predict the extent of the hazards.

Al-Bab has been under IS control since 2014, when the group seized large swathes of territory in Syria and neighbouring Iraq, proclaiming its self-described caliphate.

The town has been seen as a key prize and Syrian government troops and allied forces have also been advancing towards it in a bid to wrest it from IS.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Sunday before flying to Bahrain that IS fighters have begun deserting al-Bab, which has been under attack for weeks.

The UK-based monitor said intense battles are still raging between the Turkish forces and allied Syrian rebels on one side with the IS militants in the city, as the Turkish forces have captured areas in the western part of the city.

In addition, 194 Daesh targets - including the terror group's shelters, headquarters, defense positions, and vehicles - were hit by Free Syrian Army (FSA) fighters with Turkish army support, said a Turkish General Staff statement.
