Baftas 2017: Stars descend on London for ceremony

Hollywood musical "La La Land" picked up five British Bafta film awards on Sunday, including the best film, best director and best actress prizes, paving the way for Oscar success later this month.

Damien Chazelle has proven that it pays to be a fool who dreams by picking up the award for Best Direction for his work on La La Land at the 2017 Baftas.

Chazelle also claimed the best director award, while the movie's star Emma Stone was named the best leading actress.

The glamorous ceremony was woven with political messages, beginning with host Stephen Fry making a jibe at US President Donald Trump who recently described veteran actress Meryl Streep as "overrated".

He was cheered by an audience at London's Royal Albert Hall that included Prince William, his wife, Kate, and nominees including Meryl Streep, Casey Affleck, Emma Stone and Nicole Kidman. It also has won seven Golden Globes.

"You should know which side you're on and why and get in and take part in politics".

'Nothing you can say': Falcons stunned by comeback
Sure, the Falcons are young and talented, and their star quarterback , Matt Ryan, is playing the best football of his career. Unequivocally the most decorated and accomplished quarterback of the Super Bowl era, his five Super Bowl titles says it all.

This year's British Academy Film and Television Awards take place on Sunday, February 12. But also I think that's what we do as artists.

And while the luscious La La Land was the favourite, academy voters could choose to reward less escapist fare.

The philosophical sci-fi yarn "Arrival" and the psychological thriller "Nocturnal Animals" have nine BAFTA nominations each.

Best-picture contenders are "Arrival", "I, Daniel Blake", "La La Land", the wrenching New England drama "Manchester By The Sea" and the Miami-set coming-of-age story "Moonlight".

BAFTA 2017 Awards Nominations for Best Actor in a Leading Role are - 1) Casey Affleck - Manchester by the Sea as Lee Chandler 2) Andrew Garfield - Hacksaw Ridge as Desmond T. Doss 3) Ryan Gosling - La La Land as Sebastian Wilder 4) Jake Gyllenhaal - Nocturnal Animals as Edward Sheffield / Tony Hastings 5) Viggo Mortensen - Captain Fantastic as Ben Cash.
