Census 2016: Bedroom communities growing in Manitoba

Bridgewater, for example, with a population of 8,532 saw a growth rate of 3.5 per cent in the last five years and Middleton (pop. 1,832) saw a 4.7 per cent population increase.

Alberta's growth rate was more than double the national average, and its major cities - Calgary and Edmonton - led growth among census metropolitan areas, with population increases of 14.6 per cent and 13.9 per cent respectively. Immigration has been leading national growth over domestic birth rates since 2001, and Statistics Canada projects that the trend will continue into 2056.

The first wave of results from the 2016 census will be closely watched by municipal leaders given that population shifts influence the size of transfers from other levels of government.

"We are confident that the city is very well positioned to attract and accommodate expected growth projections based on provincial long-range planning population and employment forecasts", she said, noting that the city is preparing to release the final version of the municipality's official plan called Envisioning Our City 2041.

That's down from a growth rate of 7.1 per cent between 2006 and 2011. From 2011 to 2016, Halifax's population increased by 3.3 per cent, moderately lower than its 4.7 per cent growth during the previous five years.

The population statistics released today are the first data output from the mandatory 2016 census.

"We all know there are costs associated with growth, it's a question of who's going to pay for it", he said.

According to the census, most of the growth was in Winnipeg, Brandon, Steinbach and Winkler. The increase is above the national average for a second consecutive census period. Its population has grown by 56 people (1.3 per cent) since the 2011 census.

Several Eastern Ontario towns and cities saw a population decrease.

Kelowna among the fastest growing census metropolitan areas.

Nova Scotia isn't alone in its poor population growth performance, all the Atlantic provinces have shown slower rates compared to the rest of the country during the past three census periods.

The population and dwelling counts are the first part of the census to be released by the federal statistical agency.

A Statistics Canada graphic shows Canada's population growth over the years, powered by migratory increase and natural increase. These dwelling counts include everything from one-room apartment units to mansions.

- Among smaller urban areas, Sylvan Lake, Alta., posted a growth rate of 19.6 per cent, followed by Wasaga Beach/Collingwood, Ont., at 17.9 per cent and Okotoks, Alta., at 17.8 per cent.

"Alberta is kind of unique among the West", said Karen Mihorean, director general of StatCan's education, labour, and income statistics branch.

"When we see Manitoba's population increasing, we know Winnipeg's population is increasing as well, and increasingly significantly so, that's a good news report", Bowman said.

More information on housing and household composition will be available in future census data releases.
